Ultima fermata a White Hart Lane

Cartoline dall'ultimo pomeriggio di calcio nello storico impianto del Tottenham, che sarà abbandonato dopo 118 anni.

4 settembre 1899, Tottenham-Notts County. 14 maggio 2017, Tottenham-Manchester United. Sono le due date, e le due partite, che scandiscono l’esistenza di White Hart Lane, il campo che, per più di un secolo, ha ospitato le partite casalinghe degli Spurs. La prossima stagione il Tottenham giocherà a Wembley — “abitato” già quest’anno in occasione delle gare di Champions League — in attesa del nuovo stadio, che verrà completato nel 2018. La prossima casa degli Spurs avrà una capienza quasi raddoppiata rispetto al Lane — 61,500 posti contro 36,200 — e sorgerà nella stessa posizione (per permettere l’inizio dei lavori, un settore di White Hart Lane era già stato demolito nella scorsa estate). Il nuovo stadio, disegnato dall’importante studio architettonico Populous (tra gli altri, autore, sempre a Londra, dell’Emirates e del nuovo Wembley) sarà un ulteriore step di crescita per gli Spurs, già potenziati a livello sportivo, ma consentirà anche di riqualificare l’intera area circostante: intorno sorgeranno 579 nuove abitazioni, un hotel, un centro medico, un museo dedicato al Tottenham. Inoltre, è già stato chiuso un accordo con la Nfl, la lega di football americano, per ospitare almeno due partite stagionali. Il costo della struttura si aggira intorno ai 750 milioni di sterline.

In processione

L’ultimo pomeriggio di White Hart Lane è stato un lungo saluto d’addio da parte dei tifosi del Tottenham. Lungo le strade di accesso allo stadio, in coda ai botteghini, una lenta, coinvolgente processione. E qualche foto verso il cantiere dove si sta preparando la costruzione della nuova struttura.

L’attesa

Manca poco al calcio d’inizio. Il Chelsea ha vinto il campionato già da due giorni, ma il Tottenham vuole battere il Manchester United per mettere al sicuro il secondo posto, un piazzamento che agli Spurs manca addirittura dalla stagione 1962/63. Prima di entrare, per l’ultima volta, a White Hart Lane, qualcuno mangia qualcosa attorno agli stand pieni di maglie stampate per l’occasione, qualcun altro sfoglia il matchday programme. All’interno dello stadio, un incessante sventolare di bandiere biancoblu, mentre sul terreno di gioco fanno capolino, sotto un’immancabile pioggia londinese, le vecchie glorie del club (tra di loro Hoddle, Ardiles, Davids, Sheringham, Ginola).
